Gutter installation in Temple Terrace for older homes and big trees

Temple Terrace has established streets, older homes and a lot of oak canopy. That combination means worn gutters, tired fascia and a heavy leaf load, and we plan for all three.

Temple Terrace

Older homes under a heavy canopy

Temple Terrace sits right next to Tampa along the Hillsborough River, and much of it was built out decades ago. Many streets are lined with mid-century homes and shaded by mature oaks. It's a good-looking place to live, and it's hard on gutters.

The gutters on a lot of these houses are sectional, joined every ten feet or so, and many are well past their best. Seams drip, sections sag, and the fascia behind them has often taken years of water. Then there's the leaf load. Live oaks and laurel oaks shed through the year, and Spanish moss falls into the troughs on top of that.

So a Temple Terrace job rarely comes down to hanging new metal. We look at the wood, the trees and the style of the house before we recommend anything.

Our first look at an older home

  • Soft, split or painted-over rotten fascia
  • Drip edge missing or bent behind the gutter
  • Which trees overhang which runs
  • Seam leaks on old sectional gutters
  • The home's style and the profile that suits it

What fails first

Problems we expect on established Temple Terrace streets

Rotted fascia behind the gutter

When water gets behind an old gutter, it soaks the wood fascia. The fasteners lose their grip and the gutter pulls away. New gutters on that wood won't hold either, so we flag and repair it first.

Seams that drip after every storm

Sectional gutters rely on sealant at each joint. After years of heat and UV the sealant cracks, and every joint becomes a small leak down the wall.

Troughs packed with leaves and moss

Under oaks, an open gutter can clog within a season. Water then spills over the front and soaks the ground right along the foundation.

Downspouts choked at the elbow

Leaves compact at the first bend. Once a downspout plugs, the whole run backs up, and it's often not noticed until the next storm.

Options

Picking a profile for a character home

On some of Temple Terrace's older and more distinctive houses, the gutter is part of how the house looks. A chunky modern K-style can look out of place on a house with slim eaves and a traditional roofline.

Half-round gutters are one option there. They have a softer, traditional look, but they hold less water than a K-style of the same width, so they need enough outlets to keep up with summer downpours. On most other homes, a 5" or 6" K-style in aluminum with a baked finish is the practical choice.

5" K-styleMost single-story homesStandard capacity, wide color choice
6" K-styleBig roof planes, heavy leaf loadMore room for debris and water

Temple Terrace gutter questions

Do I need to replace the fascia when I replace old gutters?

Only the sections that are soft or rotted. We check the whole roof edge once the old gutters are off, show you what we found, and list any fascia repair in the scope before we hang anything.

Are gutter guards worth it with this many oaks?

Under heavy oak canopy, often yes. Leaves and moss fill open gutters fast. A good guard won't make gutters maintenance-free, but it cuts cleaning down a lot. Ask about the manufacturer's warranty on the guard product.

Can I get half-round gutters on an older home?

Yes, where it suits the house. We'll look at the roof area feeding each run and make sure there are enough outlets, because half-round carries less water than K-style.
