Gutters in Brandon
One town, several decades of roofs
Brandon isn't one kind of house. Drive a few miles east of Tampa and you pass older ranch homes with low hip roofs, then subdivisions of two-story houses with steep gables and several valleys, then newer communities still settling in. Each of those roofs sheds water differently, so there's no single gutter setup that fits the whole area.
On a single-story ranch, a standard 5" gutter with sensible downspout spacing often does the job. On a two-story house, the upper roof can drain onto a lower roof and then into one short gutter over the garage or the lanai. That lower run ends up carrying the water from two roofs, and it's usually the one that overflows first.
We look at each house on its own terms. Our gutter installation service starts with where the water comes off, then works back to gutter size, outlet placement and where each downspout lets go.
What we check on a Brandon visit
- Upper roofs draining onto lower ones
- Valleys aimed at an inside corner
- Gutter runs over the lanai and pool cage
- Downspouts that empty onto driveways or walks
- Fascia condition on older homes
- Any exterior color rules your HOA follows
Typical problems
What goes wrong with gutters around Brandon
These are the patterns we expect to see on a mix of older and newer suburban homes east of Tampa.
Valley overflow
Where two roof planes meet, a valley funnels a lot of water into a few feet of gutter. In a heavy afternoon storm it shoots straight over the front lip and lands in the flower bed below.
Two-story runs that can't keep up
A long second-story run drained by one downspout at the far end fills faster than it empties. Upsizing to 6", or adding an outlet in the middle, usually fixes it.
Water across the lanai
Screened lanais are everywhere in Brandon. When the gutter above one overflows or a downspout dumps next to the cage, the pavers stay wet and the screen frame takes a beating.
Builder-grade gutters wearing out
Many houses from earlier building waves still have their original gutters. Joints start dripping, hangers loosen and sections sag between fasteners.
Downspouts onto the driveway
A downspout that empties across a driveway or front walk leaves a slippery, stained path and sends water back toward the garage.
Leaves from yard trees
Oaks planted when a subdivision was new are now big enough to fill a gutter every fall and spring.
Why does a clean gutter still overflow? Our guide on gutters overflowing in storms explains the capacity side of it.
Services
Gutter work Brandon homeowners ask us for
Most calls fall into one of these four jobs. Plenty of homes need a combination.
Tearing out tired gutters
If the original gutters are leaking at every joint or pulling off the fascia, a full replacement with continuous runs usually costs less over time than patching section by section.

Brandon gutter questions
My HOA controls exterior colors. Can you work with that?
Yes. If your HOA has exterior rules, we can match approved colors. Check with your HOA on whether they need to approve the work before it starts, since that varies from one community to the next.
Do two-story homes need 6-inch gutters?
Not always. It depends on how much roof drains into each run and how many outlets it has. Big upper roofs, steep pitches and valleys push the answer toward 6", often with larger 3x4 downspouts. We size each run rather than the whole house.
Can you stop the gutter over our lanai from overflowing?
Usually. The fix might be a bigger gutter on that run, a second outlet, a diverter where a valley hits, or rerouting the downspout so it doesn't empty beside the cage. We find the cause first and then pick the fix.
